Mama said, Mama said

(a sweet solution to a tough day)

April 18, 2013 | 04:18 PM

Mama said there'd be days like this.

Days when adopting a tag-team work schedule seems less like an answered prayer and more like an endurance test.

When you want tell your spouse about your hard work day, but you have just 15 seconds to hand off a child as he rushes out the door for his work.

When your oldest child becomes enraged over homework.

While your middle child gets caught in the crossfire.

When your youngest child has a potty-training accident at the worst possible time.

When relentless rain fills your messy house with cooped up kids, muddy pawprints and the scent of wet dog.

When that big handsome blond boy's homework rage finally boils over, and your stomach and head and heart all start to ache at once - and you feel really alone.

Mama said there'd be days like this.

But then, something beautiful happens.

"Can I give him a hug?" the littlest one asks.

Slowly, gingerly, she reaches out with soft little arms to embrace the fierce-eyed lion.

His rage melts into remorse - just enough.

Later, he even lets you kiss his big blond head goodnight.

Then your husband calls to check in.

You take a breath.

"We're doing okay," you tell him.

And you know in your heart it's the truth.
