VINTAGE MOVIE NIGHT

The Great Rupert, at the Garfield Park Arts Center

November 27, 2012 | 04:10 PM

Eric Grayson will screen the film, The Great Rupert, at the Garfield Park Arts Center on Saturday, December 8, at 7 p.m. It is the December selection of the monthly Vintage Movie Nights series sponsored by the Center.

Grayson, a film historian, collector, and preservationist, will introduce the film, providing some background to the film, the director, and the actors, and offer a Q&A following the screening.

George Pal is the director of this 1950 film. Special- effects wizard Pal (1908-80) had come from Hungary as an ace animator of the Puppetoon series in the 1930s and 1940s. This is his first feature picture, starring Jimmy Durante as part of a family that has seen better times. Even the plucky Durante seems to be losing a bit of his enthusiasm when they encounter a squirrel they name Rupert, who, well... it's a Christmas movie... what do you expect is going to happen? Pal graduated from the stop-motion effects in this film to full-blown spectaculars like When Worlds Collide (1951) and War of the Worlds (1953).

Admission $3. Concessions $1. Family friendly. Free parking. For more information, call (317) 327-7135 or visit www.gpacarts.org.
