Binford Farmers Market Opens Saturday, April 6

March 19, 2013 | 11:08 AM

Saturday, April 6 marks the return of the Binford Farmers Market. In its seventh year, the northeast side market features over 60 vendors selling local farm-fresh vegetables, fruit, eggs, meats, baked goods, cheese, specialty prepared foods, as well as ready-to-eat foods for those looking for breakfast and lunch. As the summer progresses, the number of vendors will grow to over 100 vendors. Artisans attend the market the second weekend of every month bringing with them a variety of handcrafted items. Artisan products include soaps, natural cleaning products, wood items, jewelry, books, photo art, ceramics, and much more.

The Binford Farmers Market will be held indoors every Saturday in April 6 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and moves outdoors May 4 to October 26 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Holiday markets are held in November and December. The market is located on the northwest corner of Binford Boulevard and East 62nd Street in the Hawthorne Plaza shopping center.

What will you find at the market this spring? Early season produce includes spinach, rhubarb, and radishes still wearing traces of fertile Indiana soil. While we wait for the summer bounty, hydroponic greenhouse growers bring us fresh, living lettuce, greens, basil, and other herbs. Vendors will have eggs, beef, chicken, pork, lamb, breads and pastries, coffee and tea, and prepared food to take home for weeknight dinners.

"The Binford Farmers Market provides a connection to over 100 vendors with deep roots in Indiana, including farms, nurseries, bakeries, wineries, meat and fish vendors, cheese makers, specialty food products and artisan crafts," said Kas Vargo board chair and executive director of BRAG, the neighborhood organization the sponsors the Binford Farmers Market.

Opening day, April 6, will feature musical entertainment by Brett Wiscons with more acts to follow every weekend. RecycleForce has teamed up with the Binford Farmers Market once again to provide electronic waste collection on the first Saturday of every month. And book lovers will find guest author appearances. Bookmamas will be bringing local authors to the Market the third weekend in May, June, July.

Binford Farmers Market is sponsored by Binford Redevelopment and Growth, Inc (BRAG.) BRAG has a clear mission to serve as an incubator for emerging businesses in the community. By bringing together Indiana food and craft artisans, musicians, and area non-profits at the Binford Farmers Market, BRAG creates a vibrant community gathering offering local, fresh food, cultural and ethnic educational opportunities.

Market shoppers can receive updates from the market by subscribing online (www.binfordfarmersmarket.com) to the BFM e-newsletter, a weekly email newsletter featuring seasonal and vendor updates, promotions, recipes, upcoming music and other events in the BRAG area.
