Santa Claus (Indiana) ROCKS!

October 03, 2013 | 10:28 AM

Our family had the opportunity to celebrate a famous Family Fall-O-Weekend in Santa Claus, Indiana http://www.santaclausind.org/falloweekends. Forty-eight hours was certainly not enough to take in all that the area has to offer.

Musings from our experience...

Lucky 13?

2013 is the 13th year that Lake Rudolph Campground and RV Resort www.lakerudolph.com has hosted the Halloween Weekends, and it is clear they know what they are doing at this 160+ acre facility. The moment we checked in at the front gate, skilled hosts introduced the amenities and explained the wide variety of activities planned for the weekend. Security personnel were present throughout the weekend and kept a close eye on the vehicle and pedestrian traffic (particularly when young campers participated in the trick or treat event) The traditional campsites are wooded and spacious. Not a tent camper? Don't own a camper or RV? Lake Rudolph has every possible RV or cabin rental option available. We enjoyed the Rudolph Christmas cabins, especially the covered decks!

Some of our favorite activities were pumpkin decorating, seeing the tricked out golf carts and spookily decorated campsites (Can you say over the top?), trick or treating, taking part in the costume contest, ghost stories and hayrides, fishing and paddle boating just to name a few. Just a heads up, Saturday night's Halloween dance is lively. If you're not intending to dance the night away to Thriller and Gangnam Style, bring a fan, noise machine or, as any experienced camper knows, earplugs.

Have your candy and eat it, too

The campground trick-or-treating event is not the only opportunity to enjoy treats. Do not miss Santa's Candy Castle www.santascandycastle.com. It opens bright and early at 8:30 am (our breakfast of champions consisted of double chocolate fudge and several chocolate-dipped Oreos). Displays with every kind of candy and candy collectible imaginable grace every inch of this unique building. Don't leave without sampling the famous frozen hot chocolate!

Second time's a charm

This fall marks only the second time Holiday World has opened for the fall season. As usual, the park hits a home run when it comes to customer service, amenities, decor, food options, impressive live shows, and the bottomless soft drinks! www.holidayworld.com

Get Lost

The Holiday World corn mazes are absolutely A MAIZE ING! I know, cheesy, but they really are amazing. Don't miss them.

Shop 'til you drop

If only there were couches for my husband and sons to sleep on, my daughter and I would still be shopping and "oooohing and ahhhing" over the endless shelves of ornaments and home decor at the Santa Claus Christmas Store. www.santaclauschristmasstore.com This place has everything! Santa even stopped by to help the kids paint Christmas pumpkins. He was the REAL Santa, too, because he showed us his driver's license and let us pull on his beard. You can also shop online and have your gifts sent from the famous Santa Claus, IN post office which is right next door.

Walk in Abe's shoes

In addition to learning about the history of Santa at The Santa Claus Museum and Village www.santaclausmuseum.org visitors to Spencer County can experience the rich history at The National Park Service's Lincoln Boyhood Home www.nps.gov/libo. Several other close by historic sites highlight our 16th President as well. This is history at it's finest right in our great state!

Hit the trail at Santa's Stables

The folks at Santa's Stables provide excellent customer service, skilled guides and affordable family fun. Check out www.santas-stables.com to make your reservation.

And I thought the Christmas season was exhausting....

Our visit was exhausting in a wonderful way! The only thing I would have changed was to stay a few more days. Even with the time change there were things on our to do list that we will have to accomplish next year.

Don't miss the remaining Fall-O-Weekends in Santa Claus, IN!

If your fall weekends are booked this year, start planning next year's adventure! We noticed many families booking their 2014 weekends at the office on their way out of town.

Merry Halloween!
