Like to Sing?
Ongoing Each Wednesday Beginning Wednesday, May 22, 2013.

An exciting vocal opportunity is available at no cost for boys and girls primarily ages 10 to 18 who love to sing and would like to learn four-part a cappella harmony. The Central Indiana Youth Chorus is a dynamic and fun group of students who attend private, parochial, public, and home schools and are co-directed by a member of Sweet Adelines and a professional music educator.

A cappella singing is an excellent way to increase vocal skills while having fun performing at such places as the Indiana State Museum, Sandcastle Festival, Feast of the Lanterns Festival, local nursing homes, pre-concert performances for the Indy Parks Pops in the Park series, Boys and Girls Club, Kindred Hospital, Marion County Fair, and the Madison Avenue’s Miracle Mile Parade among others.

Students who participate will gain an appreciation of the original American music art form of barbershop and an increased sense of personal accomplishment. Specific skill enhancement will include note assignment, tuning, balance, dynamics, choreography, lyric treatment, and more.

Repertoire includes a variety of styles which is engaging for youth enjoyment. Music and learning CD’s are provided at no charge as well as chorus shirts for performances. The ability to read music and auditioning are not required. Part placement will be at the discretion of the director after hearing voice range. Students and parents are welcome to visit any rehearsal.

The chorus was formed when three Indianapolis adult barbershop organizations (SAI, HI, BHS) partnered with Indy Parks and Recreation in May 2007, to provide a free, extra curricular, music activity for Indianapolis area youth. Chorus youth have attended educational events such as the Greater Cincinnati Harmony Festival for Youth and Harmony Explosion camp the past four summers. The chorus also sponsors an all day annual local workshop every October.

Student Generated Vision Statement

CIYBC will provide students across Central Indiana with the excitement and joy that comes from singing challenging, fun songs that incorporate a myriad of barbershop repertoire. It will grow to at least 50 team-oriented, focused, prepared, and responsible members. Through partnerships with established barbershop choruses, performances that provide service to the community, and music that lifts the soul, the CIYBC will become a respected, well-known, and well-rounded a cappella musical organization.

Parents who wish are welcome to participate in the support team by attending rehearsals, transporting students, or participating in administrative tasks are an integral part of the success of this chorus. The chorus rehearses year round at the Garfield Park Arts Center located just off I-65 near downtown Indianapolis.
