Ten Ways to be a Fit Family

by Carrie Bishop

October 01, 2011

Families have every excuse to forgo fitness - hectic schedules, shorter days, cooler temperatures - but forget about it! Parents pull it together and get your family active. It doesnít require an expensive gym membership either, just a little get up and go.

Abby Troyer of INShape Indiana tells parents, ďGet your family out for a walk after dinner instead of watching TV, have fruits and veggies instead of chips and cookies. Set an example for your kids to follow for the rest of their lives.Ē

Healthy advice that may be made easier with the following tips.

Kick the family into high gear with a high-octane obstacle course in your back yard or living room.

Who says it has to be 90 degrees to swim? Dive in at the nearest indoor pool and swim like itís the fourth of July. No sunscreen required.

Double dutch or single rope, jumping rope is a fun and great way to get the whole body in shape and stay warm on a fall day.

Race your kids and the clock to see who can do the most jumping jacks, sit ups, push ups, and hops. Loser takes out the trash!

Monkey around at a nearby playground. Donít know where all the parks are? Visit for a list. Heck, try them all!

Make a music playlist that really jams, then get jamming as a family in the living room while the chicken pot pie bakes.

Take an INShape Indiana walking challenge. Visit, choose either the four or 12 week walking program, lace up your sneakers, then go!

Get fit and connect with the community at a local run/walk race. The Heart of Indiana Run/Walk/Wheel race and Down Syndrome Indiana 14th Annual Buddy Walk are just two of the races going on this month.

Dust off your bike and hit the road. A leisurely ride around the neighborhood is a great way for parents and kids to wind down after a long day.

Rake your leaves. The yard and your body will thank you for it.
